Caladium ‘Candidum’ grows in borders and undergrowth in the tropics, an ideal option if you’re looking for a plant that thrives in low light. Leaves are arrow-shaped and known for their paper-like texture. White is their primary colour. This highlights the details of the deep green and intricate veining. Occasionally, green margins may appear. While it may be understated, it never fails to catch people’s attention

The Caladium 'Candidum' belongs to the Araceae family. They originate from the tropical rainforests of Central America, most concentrated in Brazil and the surrounding areas. They thrive in warm, humid, and shaded environments 

Seasonal Dormancy

It’s important to keep in mind that caladiums go into dormancy in colder climates. Its leaves will fade and die back. This is a completely natural part of its cycle-you haven’t killed the plant! Reduce watering significantly. When the foliage dries, stop watering. Store the tuber in a cool, dark, dry place and allow the plant to rest. Resume watering in the spring and wait for new growth to emerge

    • Lighting: Thrives in full / part shade. Avoid direct sunlight 

    • Watering: Water once top inch of soil is dry-prefers to be consistently moist (try to bottom water whenever possible to avoid those ghats!) 

    • Soil: Well-draining soil (I use a cacti / a desert mix for all my plants). They despise sitting in soggy soil, add perlite or vermiculite for aeration  

    • Environment: Native to the tropics, they require high humidity and warmth (ideally above 21°C) 

    • Toxicity: Caladiums are toxic when digested, keep away from pets  

    • Top tip: Leaves losing their white variegation? Move the plant to a lighter spot

      Caladiums love humidity. Mist your plant 2 to 3 times per week. Group plants close together to create a natural humid microclimate
